Lydia Gyurina (b.1998) is a New Hampshire-based artist making her artistic home at Creative Ventures Gallery. With her most recent body of work, Lydia brings high impact on a small scale. Her oil pastel abstractions, typically smaller than 9″x12,” are vibrant and playful, fully saturating the page with harmonious color fields, with compositions ranging from bold and simple compositions, to more illustrative examples.

In her drawings, Lydia works quickly and intuitively, typically with minimal sketching.Taking advantage of the never-dry nature of oil pastel, she blends with her fingers and with intentionally dirty pastel sticks, giving the drawings an organic, lived-in quality.

The subjects of Lydia’s pastels range from simple geometric forms to organic objects such as eggs, teardrops, rainbows, flowers and clouds. Titles and motifs often evoke humor, opaque symbolism, and sometimes storytelling. Certain drawings will incorporate prompts drawn from randomly selected words, combined to tell surprising narratives. Lydia is interested in art as a portal to the mind, and in finding beauty within the imperfect.

Lydia holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Kinetic Imaging from Virginia Commonwealth University. Exploring a wide range of media, her past studies included animation, video, sound, and poetry, with a focus on experimental self-portraiture, and hand-drawn and stop-motion animation.
