Description

This class is designed for anyone interested in learning how create a painting using color in the  medium of your choice, pastel, acrylic or oil.  As a beginning student you will learn how to set yourself up for the best success in the medium you have selected. Students with prior experience will have an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of their medium. All students will learn how to simplify the complexities of landscapes and at the same time learn how to create form. Topics will include application of the pastel or paint, composition, value, atmospheric perspective, color and more. This class will be ongoing with this instructor and can be joined at any time. Having prior drawing skills is an important place to start.

Please bring what you have of either pastels, oil or acrylic and lets have fun!

Pastel Supplies: 48 color set of Nupastels (I have some for purchase) plus any other pastels you may have and sanded pastel paper (I have some for purchase) of your choice – 9×12 or 11×14 in size. Please don’t waste your time and money on Canson paper, it is strictly for drawing and we will be painting. I can supply the backing boards to work on or if you have a lightweight drawing board that is 19 x 20 bring that. If you don’t have a drawing board, you will also need a pad of tracing paper little larger than size you plan on working (11×14 or 12×16) to use as a portfolio to store your pastel paintings.

Oil or Acrylic supplies: Bring canvas paper or canvas board 11 x 14 or 9 x 12 to start with.

Oils: (Either oil-based or water mixable oils) For oil based oil paints – Please bring a container of Spectrum Walnut Oil (grocery store) to use to clean your brushes or plan to wash your brushes at home. Artist grade walnut oil can be used as a medium as you paint to make your paint flow easier and to make glazes. For water-mixable oils, it will be optional to bring a water mixable thinner to make the paint smoother, but not necessary. Bring a palette, palette knife, bristle brushes, Viva paper towels, smock, reference picture (or we can put together a still life). It is optional but very handy to bring a pizza box or the like to transport your painting home. Please plan to work in one type of oil paint or the other. Mixing the oil and water-mixable oils too much, negates the water-mixable quality of the paint making it more difficult to clean your brushes.

Acrylics: I have paper plates you can use for a palette but a flat plastic container or disposable acrylic palette paper would work better. If you have a spray bottle, bring it. You will need synthetic hair brushes, paper towels, smock, reference picture (or we can set up a still life) and a watercolor pencil for sketching.

Paints (oil and acrylic) –  you will need: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light or Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Deep or Indian Yellow, Cadmium Red Medium or Naphthol Red Light, Alizarin Crimson Permanent or Quinacridone Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue.  Everything else you can mix. That is 7 tubes in total. Make sure your white is a larger tube.
